Butterfly Project – Creativity, Nature, and Connection

Tough Dough artists Alessandra Ausenda and John Keys worked alongside art teacher Sarah Mackenzie and a Year 6 class at St Hilary School, to explore how nature can support creativity, curiosity, and well-being.

The project aligned with the class topic on renewable energy and the question: “How does our carbon footprint make the Earth angry?” Sessions included mindful walks to Friendship Woods, sensory-based artmaking, and temporary outdoor sculptures. In the classroom, children created portraits and developed collaged butterfly artworks carrying messages of care for the planet.

The final installation was displayed in the school’s field pavilion, where it remains through the summer term. The project ended with a well-attended celebration for families and carers.
